Our Philosophy

Collingwood's Puglia-style Italian restaurant.

The Code is chef Alessio Albano's pizza bar, in an art-deco building at the quiet end of Langridge Street, Collingwood. Alessio is from Lecce, in Salento, the heel of Italy's boot. He was head chef at DOC Carlton before opening The Code to cook the food of home.

Puglia-style pizza is not the soft, puffy Neapolitan pizza many Melbourne pizzerias make. The base is thinner and crisper, with a lighter crumb, and it's built for a few very good toppings: San Marzano tomatoes, proper mozzarella, Parmigiano Reggiano from Italy. That's the cucina povera way: simple food, done properly.

Why dine at The Code

What makes it worth the trip to Collingwood.

A chef from Lecce, cooking from home

Founder and chef Alessio Albano comes from Lecce, in Puglia's Salento peninsula, and ran the kitchen at DOC Carlton before opening The Code. This is his food, the way it's cooked at home.

Strict about ingredients

San Marzano tomatoes and Parmigiano Reggiano from Italy, with no substitutes. Fresh produce is bought at the market and the menu moves with the seasons.

Pasta made in-house

Lasagna Della Mamma and a seasonal pasta, made from scratch. When the gnocchi is on, order it: it's the dish reviewers mention more than any other.

Two minutes off Smith Street

At 37 Langridge Street, Collingwood, a short walk from Fitzroy and Abbotsford. Tram 86 runs along Smith Street, trams 12 and 109 along Victoria Parade, and there's street parking nearby. See the suburbs we serve.

Groups & functions

Long tables for birthdays and private functions with a menu built for your group.
